Fall Nonfiction Book Bundle Giveaway!

All through the months I save advance copies of books until I build up a perfect book bundle just waiting to be mailed into a happy reader’s hot little hands.

The newest bundle is an amazing collection of nonfiction, memoir and biography.featuring some really big names.

  • Dancing with the Enemy: My Family’s Holocaust Secret by Paul Glaser. Raised Roman Catholic, the author learned that his family had Jewish roots. While researching his family he found out the story of his Aunt Rosie, betrayed to the Nazis, who survived Auschwitz by teaching dance lessons to the SS.
  • Glitter and Glue: A Memoir by Kelly Corrigan. The author of previous memoirs Lift and The Middle Place, here Corrigan tells of her tricky relationship with her mother which gained even more depth after she became a nanny in Australia.
  • Men We Reaped: A Memoir by Jesmyn Ward. Ward won the National Book Award for her Hurricane Katrina novel Salvage the Bones. Here she shares the story of her family in rural Mississippi, their community, their struggle and most of all, the tragic loss of five young black men in her life, including her brother. A vital book on race and place in the US.
  • Little Failure: A Memoir by Gary Shteyngart. Renowned for witty and strong fiction such as Absurdistan, Shteyngart was born “Igor” in Leningrad near the end of the Soviet Union. He shares his immigrant experience and how he earned his mother’s nickname, “Failurchka,”–little failure, by refusing to be a lawyer or accountant.
  • Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by Sheri Fink. Haunting from the very first page, Fink’s meticulously researched book follows the plight of a group of doctors, nurses, patients and family members trapped in Memorial Hospital during Katrina.
  • The Death of Santini by Pat Conroy. Conroy is a master of both fiction (The Prince of Tides) and memoir (My Losing Season) but here he focuses on the strongest figure in his life and his career: his father Don Conroy, who he used as a model for Bull Meachem in his novel The Great Santini.
  • Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China by Jung Chang. At the age of 16, Cixi was chosen to be a concubine of the emperor. When he died, her five-year-old son took the throne and she took over the country behind the scenes. An amazing story of the most important woman in Chinese history.

Young Adult Giveaway

Red Letter Reads was lucky enough to spend some time at the biggest book event of the year: Book Expo America. While there we picked up quite a haul, more than we could possibly read ourselves. So we’re sharing the love. This week we’re giving away a book bundle of new and upcoming Young Adult books we think you’ll love. Here’s the awesome loot for one lucky winner:

If there’s one book I’m hearing a lot of buzz about, it’s The Bone Season, the first in a new series by brand new author Samantha Shannon. The movie rights have already been snatched up and everyone is buzzing. Set in 2059, Paige is part of a criminal underworld where she uses her powers as a dreamwalker to get information. With her special abilities, she could be arrested simply for existing. Sent to a prison for clairvoyants, she now has her worst enemy as her mentor and must figure out how to escape.

The Thorn Ogres of Hagwood by Robin Jarvis is Book One of the Hagwood Trilogy. It’s recently been released as an e-book by our friends at Open Road Media and the 2nd book, Dark Waters of Hagwood, was recently released. Get started with this fantasy series (the 3rd book is on its way…) that’s a great choice for lovers of Tolkien and Rowling.

My Life After Now by Jessica Verdi has some real raves on Goodreads. A lot of YA out there addresses teens with real, serious problems and how they address them realistically. My Life After Now‘s protagonist, Lucy, finds her life turned upside down when one stupid mistake leaves her with an HIV diagnosis and the realization that her life will never be the same. A debut novel, we’re guessing Jessica Verdi is someone to watch.

One of our favorite indie imprints is going big this fall with Relic by Heather Terrell. Soho Teen is publishing this book, the first in a new series, that’s billed as Game of Thrones meets Hunger Games. Do I have your attention now?? Heroine Eva leaves the life she always expected to replace her dead brother as a Tester to hunt in the wild North for relics. A good dose of societal commentary, a different kind of dystopia, we’re really excited about it.

This book bundle is anything but homogeneous. We’ve also got a graphic novel for you. Check out Battling Boy by Paul Pope, winner of multiple Eisner awards. A mashup of mythology, comic book super heroes and coming of age classics, Battling Boy has a 12-year-old demigod who takes on the horrifying monsters of Acropolis.

For good measure we’re throwing in an excerpt from the graphic novel version of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, coming in October, and the 2013 spotlight excerpt collection from Open Road Media. And we’ll be sending it all to you in a snazzy Relic reusable bag.
